OFXCSV / Practical guide
Analyze a multi-currency OFX file in an Excel pivot table
Retain account currency and original-currency fields without adding unlike currencies.
Distinguish account and transaction currencies
CURDEF is the statement account currency. Currency symbol/rate and original-currency fields on a transaction are preserved when present. They are source metadata; OFXCSV does not fetch rates or assume a missing rate. Transaction Amount remains exactly the statement’s signed amount.
Create the pivot
Open XLSX, select a cell in the Transactions table and insert a pivot table. Add Currency then Account ID to Rows, Type to Columns and Amount to Values. A source with USD and GBP creates separate currency groups. Disable a mixed-currency grand total or avoid using it for financial decisions.
Exclude snapshots from sums
Ledger and available balances are snapshots, sometimes from different dates, and are repeated on transaction rows as context. Use the Accounts sheet to inspect each snapshot once. Summing balance columns would multiply the balances by the number of transactions and has no accounting meaning.
Check correction rows
CORRECTFITID and CORRECTACTION survive export. The converter retains these records without applying delete or replace semantics. Review them against the original transaction before calculating activity. The Validation sheet warns when correction records exist, so a simple pivot does not accidentally treat them as additional spending.
